Staff Accountant with Insurance & Database Experience

Position Summary

Advanced utilization of spreadsheet software and accounting principles to prepare financial reports, special purpose reports, budgets and the Company’s consolidated financial statements.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Prepares various financial reports and assists with the monthly Consolidated balance sheet and income statement.
  • Supports and prepares schedules for GAAP and regulatory audits.
  • Analyzes operational data, organizes it into appropriate context, and prepares internal reports.
  • Assists in the preparation of the Company’s Budget and analysis.
  • Completes special projects as necessary.


Requirements:

Education and Experience

  • 2-4 years directly relevant accounting experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) in Accounting from a four-year college or university.
  • 2-4 years insurance industry experience

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

  • A Knowledge of PC and/or mainframe operating environments.  Ability to use advanced word processing, spreadsheet, and database techniques independently.
  • Ability to understand complex problems and to collaborate and explore alternative solutions.
  • Ability to compose detailed financial reports from data bases.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. 
  • Understanding of accounting, budgeting and consolidations.
  • Ability to make operating decisions and assist in formulating recommendations.

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment with on-going strict deadlines and changing project assignments.
  • Requires repetitive movement of wrists, hands, and/or fingers for sustained periods of time.
  • Requires standing less than 1/3 of the time.
  • Requires walking less than 1/3 of the time. 
  • Requires sitting more than 2/3 of the time.
  • Requires use of fingers and hands or feeling more than 2/3 of the time.
  • Requires talking or hearing between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
  • Requires the ability to lift up to ten pounds between 1/3 and 2/3 of the time.
  • Requires close vision, defined as clear vision at 20 inches or less.
  • Requires the ability to adjust focus, meaning the ability to adjust the eyes to bring an object into sharp focus.

Freedom to Act:  Works consists of somewhat difficult tasks with several choices as to what operations and processes will be followed.  Requires use of moderate judgment in applying policies and adapting standards to fit facts and conditions.  Work is performed with some latitude for independent action or decision within policies and practices.
